Novitiate begins when a man has completed postulancy and receives the habit of probation. It lasts at least one year and may be extended depending upon readiness for profession of temporary vows. The novitiate year is devoted to the foundations of the Franciscan life. It combines intensive prayer and spiritual direction with Franciscan history and spirituality, discernment of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and the  Rule and Constitutions of the Third Order.  At the end of the novitiate, a friar professes temporary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for three years. Thereafter a friar renews temporary vows until he is eligible to profess solemn vows, which are perpetually binding. A friar is ordinarily in temporary vows for four years. Father Kevin Queally, TOR is the Director of Novices the TOR Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
