Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

On Friday evening, May 26, 2017 two men were received into the Novitiate of the Third Order Regular Franciscans, Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  The reception ceremony took place during Evening Prayer.

During the ceremony the Minister Provincial  questions the brothers with these words: What do you ask of us?

The brothers respond: Moved by divine inspiration we wish to share your life in the brotherhood of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis, we earnestly ask to be clothed with the habit of probation. Test us that we may learn how to take on our shoulders the yoke of the Lord in love and joy for the perfect following of Christ according to the example of St. Francis the poor, humble lover of the cross.

Novitiate begins when a man has completed postulancy and receives the habit of probation. It lasts at least one year and may be extended depending upon readiness for profession of temporary vows. The novitiate year is devoted to the foundations of the Franciscan life. It combines intensive prayer and spiritual direction with Franciscan history and spirituality, discernment of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and the Rule and Constitutions of the Third Order.  At the end of the novitiate, a friar professes temporary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for three years. Thereafter a friar renews temporary vows until he is eligible to profess solemn vows, which are perpetually binding. A friar is ordinarily in temporary vows for four years.
