Franciscan friar, writer, and scholar to offer a course at the School of Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure University over the summer of 2017.
Beginning with an investigation of the nature of Christianspirituality and related hermeneutical and methodological issues, this coursewill examine the various expressions of Franciscan spirituality, its particularsymbols and practices, as well as its approach to the choice of poverty,chastity and obedience. The central focus will be given to an understanding ofFranciscan life as a “life of penance,” as this was understood and lived byFrancis and Clare, and the men and women of the various branches of theFranciscan family. A schematic historical survey of the tradition will serve tounderline the creativity of the Franciscan tradition of spirituality, as wellas its possible distortions and excesses.
