Fr Marion Deck

Fr. Marion R. Deck, T.O.R., 83, of the Third Order Regular Franciscans of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, died Sunday, November 20, at Cambria Care, Ebensburg, after an extended illness.   He was born on April 7, 1933 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He was baptized at St. Peter’s Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana, MD given the name Richard Vernon.   He was the son of the late Ferdinand A. Deck and Gladys Nulf Deck.   He graduated from St. Catherine Grade School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Mt. Carmel High School, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.   Following high school, he served in the United States Navy. 

He entered the T.O.R. community in Loretto, PA in September, 1964, and did his Postulancy at Mt. Assisi Friary, Loretto, PA.   He made his novitiate at Sacred Heart Friary, Winchester, Virginia and pronounced his First Vows on July 1, 1966.   On July 1, 1969, Fr. Marion pronounced his Solemn Vows at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Loretto, PA.  He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop James Hogan, D.D. of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Loretto, PA on August 15, 1969.  

Fr. Marion received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois in 1963.   He completed his Theological Studies at St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, PA in 1969.   He received his Master of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN in 1977.  

During his long and faithful Franciscan life, Fr. Marion ministered in the various works of the province.  He worked in formation, administration and taught at St. Francis Seminary.   After a very serious automobile accident in 1980, Fr. Marion began the ministry of prayer and suffering.   To this ministry he became a witness and example for his brothers.    

Fr. Marion was preceded in death by his sister, Sister M. Rosalie, C.D.P.   He is survived by his sisters: Sister M. Rosamonde, C.D.P., of Massachusetts, Mrs. Virginia Reis, Indiana, and Mrs. Dolores Fontana of California, nieces and nephews, and his Franciscan brothers. Friends will be received at the Chapel of St. Francis Friary-Mt. Assisi, Loretto, PA at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2016 with the Vigil service celebrated at 7:00 p.m..  Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Friary-Mt. Assisi, Loretto PA with the Very Reverend Richard L. Davis, T.O.R., Minister Provincial, as principal celebrant.   Following the Mass, interment will take place at the Franciscan Friars’  Cemetery, on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto, PA.
