Brian Miller



Fr. Brian J. Miller, T.O.R., 91, of the Third Order Regular Franciscans of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, died November 6, 2016 at St. Francis Friary – Mt. Assisi, Loretto, Pennsylvania after an illness.  He was born March 4, 1925 in Braddock, PA and given the name John Wilfred.  He was the son of the late James and Margaret Clougherty.  He was a graduate of St. Thomas High School, Braddock, PA.  

After graduation, he entered the T.O.R. community on September 6, 1944 at Mt. Assisi Friary.  He made his novitiate at Sacred Heart Friary, Loretto, PA and professed his first vows on September 20, 1945.  Father Brian professed his solemn vows on September 20, 1948 at Mt. Assisi Friary, Loretto, PA.  Fr. Brian was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop Richard T. Guilfoyle of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, PA on May 16, 1953. 

Fr. Brian received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from St. Francis College, Loretto, PA in 1949.  He completed Theological studies at St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, PA in 1953.  Fr. Brian received his Master of Arts in Mathematics from Villanova University, PA in 1959.  During his long and very fruitful Franciscan life, Fr. Brian ministered in education and administration.  He served on the faculty of St. Thomas More High School, Philadelphia, PA and on the founding faculty of Bishop Egan High School, Levittown, PA.  He taught mathematics at St. Francis College, Loretto, PA where he also served as the Registrar; and at St. Francis Preparatory School, Spring Grove, PA.  He served as Executive Vice President of St. Francis College, Loretto, PA, and as Assistant Headmaster at St. Francis Preparatory School.  He served on the Boards of Trustees of Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, St. Francis College and St. Francis Preparatory School.  In 1992, Fr. Brian transitioned into pastoral ministry at St. Mary, Our Lady of Grace Church, St. Petersburg, Florida. He served there until 2011 as parochial vicar.  As his health declined, Fr. Brian returned to St. Francis Friary – Mt. Assisi, Loretto where he served in the ministry of prayer.  Using his mathematical skills and financial expertise, Fr. Brian served the T.O.R. Province as Provincial Treasurer for more than 20 years. 

Through his keen insight and financial wisdom he left the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on solid ground both literally and figuratively.  Fr. Brian was preceded in death by his brothers:  Joseph, Edward, Fr. James; and his sisters Marita Doyle, Peggy Delaney, and Patricia Groark.  He is survived by many nieces and nephews and grand- nieces and grand-nephews and his Franciscan brothers. 


Friends will be received at the Chapel of St. Francis Friary-Mt. Assisi, Loretto, PA at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.  Vigil service will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Friary – Mt. Assisi, Loretto, PA with Very Reverend Richard L. Davis, T.O.R., Minister Provincial, as principal celebrant.  Following the Mass, interment will take place at the Franciscan Friars’ Cemetery, on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto, PA.  Memorial contributions may be made to support retired T.O.R.
